Jane Webb grew up with a father who worked in fine woods, and a mother who was an expert tailor. Even as a child, she felt that it was foolish to wear something just like someone else had. Why look just the same?
After graduating from Tufts University with a B.A. in English and Philosophy, she worked for several years as a Systems Engineer for IBM. She followed her advertising executive husband from New York City to Tokyo, Amsterdam, and Chicago, and points in between. The most recent move has been to a mountainside studio in Boulder, Colorado.
Fibers have never been far from her hands. She designed and made needlepoint tapestries and rugs for years. Then, in 1982, her husband gave her a rosewood shuttle for her birthday. That was the beginning of Webb Weaving & Design.
Jane made clothing for herself, family and friends until she saw that this was becoming a full-time occupation, and a full-fledged business. Now, designs from Webb Weaving are available at fine shops in Europe, Japan, and across the United States.
A mostly self-taught weaver, she has won awards around the country for her designs. Finding that the quality of fibers which were available commercially was not good enough, she learned to spin, and her entire line today is hand-spun, as well as hand-dyed. It is impossible to obtain this unique look and hand with mill spun yarns, as lovers of handmade Oriental carpets are well aware.
The fibers she uses were never intended for commercial use. The silk is of exceptional quality, the wool from American flocks raised especially for handspinners.
During the past ten years, she has been working with dyed silk linings in her jackets, coats, and vests. These are dyed by various processes a number of times, then hand-painted with fantasy motifs from nature and the imagination. Customer demand has led to all-silk pieces and ensembles. Her silk scrapwork jackets, padded with soft wool, are especially popular.
The styles from Webb Weaving & Design are purely classic and simple, and pure luxury to feel and to wear. One-of-a-kind, they are instantly recognizable wherever they are worn. The endless variety in color and texture of the handworked fibers is truly an investment in the quality of your life.
